At least these light units were able to stop quickly. I experienced a
similar slow speed derailment where our units were pushed along by the
momentum of a 8,000-ton train. It was in the fall of 1978, and my conductor
and I had just brought a train from Buffalo, NY to Bellevue, OH (248 miles).
As we were pulling into the yard at Bellevue on a pull-in track we were
radioed to take a crossover into another yard track. We noticed that the
crossover was already lined for our movement so we proceeded at slow speed
only to derail as we negotiated the first turnout. As we bounced and rocked
along the ties, I thought we would never get stopped, although in reality we
did not go all that far.
The mechanical supervisor at the Bellevue service track, Emory Crowder, was
obviously upset as he came over to survey the damage, sure that we had not
secured the facing point switch of the turnout. His inspection revealed
that the switch was ok; the wheels on the lead diesel unit has simply
climbed the rail and dropped down on the wrong side of the rail. The
technical among us would say that the wheels climbed the rail because of an
excessive L/V ratio. But, what caused that?
