[This should have appeared ahead of the September 27, 1908, article "Bluefield in 1908 -- A new railroad" about the rumor of the Southern Ry. building through the Clinch Valley. This article was delayed because it was so indistinct on the microfilm that it had to be reviewed at a later session to clear up some items.]

News of the Clinch
------
Norton, Va., Sept. 17--Some weeks since it was currently reported that the Southern system, which was somewhat belated in reaching this coal field, and which made a strenuous effort to do so after being awakened by the fact that the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio and other trunk lines were about to occupy the field, after reaching Norton [???] attempted to get control of the Clinch Valley division of the Norfolk & Western but failed to do so. Now a survey is being made parallel to the Clinch Valley for a new line supposed to be by the Southern. This is very likely true, as the Southern is anxious to reach the Toms Creek operations, which are its best feeders. The coal and coke from Toms Creek is now hauled by Virginia & Southwestern cars over the Norfolk & Western and Louisville & Nashville to Appalachia, but in a short time will only go over the Norfolk & Western and connect at Norton with the Interstate, its own road [??? The Interstate was completed into Norton in 1909 as an independent railroad.]. There is little doubt but that the Southern will build east as far as Toms Creek at the earliest date possible.
