Question about the N&W freight "hooter" whistle

During various in-cab recordings of Y6 pushers on Blue Ridge, Link was constantly trying to adjust the mike position or gain in order to reduce whistle distortion. In one sequence he asked the engineer to let him know when he was going to blow the whistle so he could turn the input volume down. Sometimes the engineer would forget and a lot of distortion would result, alone with some comments by Link!
