N&W Completes Setting Of Piles For Underpass
The Norfolk and Western Railway has completed the setting of piles
for the first stage of construction of the underpass of the
Shenandoah Division tracks connecting Liberty and Mundy roads, NE.
The piles still must be cut down to grade to permit placing of
bridge timbers to support the southbound tracks and a siding while
the contractor is building the box on the east side.
About 75 per cent of the piles have been set and the remainder,
which will support the northbound tracks, will be driven when the
first half of the box is complete.
All the preliminary work to be done by the N&W will be complete
when the contractor moves in.
City Council tomorrow is expected to award the contract to Ralph
E. Mills Co., at a figure of $161,180.
When bids were opened tow weeks ago, Council indicated its
intention to accept the bid. It was on the strength of this implied
acceptance that the N&W has gone ahead with the work in order that
there would be little or no delay when the contractor goes on the site.
Mills was low bidder on both phases of the work - the underpass
itself and the laying of sanitary and storm sewers and paving of the
connecting link.
The work will require five or six months to complete.
