I can't say when the practice started. Neither can
I say it still continues, but in the 70's, Portsmouth
regularly dispatched a Kenova Turn. It took
traffic for Kenova that had accumulated at
Portsmouth and returned with traffic originated
at Kenova and vicinity.
In those days, Portsmouth had a time freight
hump and it was simple enough to bring
everything to Portsmouth and put it in the
correct classification.
I believe Louis Newton told me that mty
hoppers were usually set out at Cyrus or
Neal for hopper trains to pick up or for the
Kenova Switcher to return to the C&O or
line up for the Lenore Branch.
Remember, most through time freights have
some semblance of blocking. Picking up
at Rex, Kenova, wherever meant that
the Cincinnati's had to be dovetailed into
the Cincinnati block, Columbus's to the
Columbus block, etc.
Can't say what was at Rex prior to my
'87 track chart, but mine shows 5 private
road crossings and one public crossing --
not exactly a place where you'd store
cars.
