Gossip of Lobby and Street
------
The Norfolk and Western railway has placed an order for 100 engines, which must be delivered between September 1st and January 1st. Freight conditions were never so congested as at present and it is imperative that additional engines be secured as soon as possible to facilitate the freight movements.
A railroad official stated yesterday that between Williamson and Portsmouth within a short space of a few hours there were 1300 loaded cars, a most remarkable record.
The elimination of the Jamestown flyers was due more largely to their interference with freight traffic than a lack of patronage. They seriously impeded the freight movements, and chiefly for this reason were they discontinued. The Norfolk and Western never was in such prosperous condition as at present and the trainmen can put in as many extra hours as they wish. The first installment of the big order for new engines will the shipped the middle of this month.

[Does the complaint about passenger trains interfering with freight movements sound familiar? Jefferies' book lists these 100 new engines as Class M1 4-8-0's, 50 from Baldwin {No. 1000-1049} and 50 from Richmond {1950-1099}.]
