A few years ago all of the locomotives and other equipment in the scrapyard was donated to the VMT. To help things along the Scrapyard Executors actually had the asbestos removed from the locomotives so that isn't a problem any more.
After several years the scrapyard owners started looking for someone else to take the equipment as long as they paid for the move and that is how the gentleman got the 917.
As a side note the 4 hopper cars that were moved were  moved by a gentleman who wanted one of them for himself so he paid for the move of the hopper cars himself. At least that is my understanding.
