Farewell to Steam on the N&W

In June, there were questions and  comments
on the tinted photos N&W supplied to  stations.
When Mr. Saunders became president,  those
showing steam locomotives were ordered  to
be removed.
 
Steam locomotives ?  Not exactly.   When
Mr. Smith retired,  Maintenance of Way  had
N&W in excellent shape.  Recognizing  that
the railroad could exist for a period  with
deferred maintenance, Mr. Saunders  made
a  splash by cutting track forces to  show
big savings.   Some employees noted that
they'd never seen weeds growing on  the
main line -- until Saunders.
