1.  Very good engineers

Yes indeed.  There was an engineer on the
Pocahontas Division working the pusher
(in steam days) that failed to take into
account the curve at Bluestone, speed of the
train, etc.  Result ?  The train buckled in
the curve and the engineer was held out of
service.



Unlike Southern, N&W never went for the radio-
controlled pushers.  On the Winston District,
there are several rip-raps south of Boone's
Mill where the engineer on the lead unit has'em
in dynamic braking and the pusher engineer
has'em in Run 8.  Now that take co-ordination.
