"With the air hose open on the other end of the train? Most trains won't move with diesel power with no air pressure in the trainline!"

?

Walt,

There is a trick of sorts to it...and it doesn't envolve a Class A!

Well it wasn't a modern locomotive, but rather three

Baldwin AS-616's.? Before radios, there was a double

made a Star, NC and the coupling was made strictly
by feel.? An engineer named "The Horse-Trader" doubled
over, the cut coupled, but the pin didn't drop.? Shame on
the brakeman !? Raleigh-bound,?the head-end crew?never
looked back for the first 20 miles.? That's when it was
discovered that the three Baldwins had pumped the
emergency application off.? Rather than contact the
dispatcher, "The Horse Trader" reversed course and
returned to Star for the rest of the train.? No protection.
After being held out of service,? he received the ultimate
put-down on his first day back.? He was asked, "Did you
claim the additional mileage ?"?
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Harry Bundy?
