RAILROAD NOTES

The Cairo & Norfolk
  It is learned that operations will begin on the Cairo and Norfolk 
Railroad by July 15th, according to the present plans of President Goode of 
that company, who writes that he will be in Roanoke at an early date and 
from here will go over the entire route. The company has immediately 
available a sum that will justify the beginning of operations which the 
company is anxious to do at the earliest moment on account of the abundance 
and cheapness of labor. The company has estimated that it can build the 
road at a much cheaper price per mile than the cost of the Virginian 
Railway. Roanoke lumber contractors are figuring on supplying the lumber 
for the entire line, while it is reported negotiations are on for grading 
contracts.
   A survey of the route has not been made but the route has been planned 
from information supplied by engineers who are familiar with the entire 
route, and grading contracts will be begun on the tracks of the engineers.

Work on Virginian Railway Tracks
   The track-laying force on the Virginian (Tidewater) railway has reach 
Meherrin. The force is now busy putting in a side track here, and it is 
expected that before very long regular trains will be running from Meherrin 
to Norfolk. The laying of the steel rails will be carried on as rapidly as 
possible from Meherrin west, though the work is necessarily slow, because 
of the small force of men employed and the bad condition of the cuts.
