N&W Worker Killed in Yards

Body Found Between Tracks

A 60-year-old Norfolk and Western Railway car inspector met death
while at work in the railway yards near 15th street, SW, about noon yesterday.
He was Arthur Claybourne Early of 1813 Patterson Ave., SW. This
body was found lying between two tracks. His right leg had been mangled.
Dr. Charles M. Irvin, city medical examiner, said it had not been
determined how Early was caught and run over, apparently by a
railroad car. He said railway officials were investigating.
It was apparent, Dr. Irvan said, that Early crawled from beneath a
car to safety between the tracks. It appeared, he added, that the man
may have made an attempt to halt the flow of blood from the mangled leg.
He said Early's belt had been removed, indicating the possibility
he may have attempted to form a tourniquet on the leg just above the
knee. There were no injuries other than the mangled leg, the medical
examiner said.
