Granting of Right of Way to Tidewater Road Delayed in Roanoke Council

    A dispatch from Roanoke says:
    The Norfolk and Western gained a second point tonight in their fight against the Tidewater Railway company.  They won out on the injunction proceedings by the Tidewater people abandoning the contest.  A third meeting of the city council was held tonight to discuss granting a right of way through the Gish farm, which is owned by the city.
    After three hours of filibustering and a number of speeches by attorneys, including one by Lucian H. Cocke, chief attorney for the Norfolk and Western, it was decided to postpone the final decision of the city council until the Third instant, when President L. E. Johnston of the Norfolk and Western will be in the city and may have some suggestions to offer.

[In my Feb. 28, 2008, message the Tidewater served notice on the N&W that the former would apply on March 14 for an injunction to prevent the N&W from constructing the remainder of the Roanoke Belt Line on the "abandoned" right-of-way on the south side of the Roanoke River.  The Tidewater wanted to build on that side of the river where the "abandoned" right-of-way was because it involved much less excavation than on the north side of the river.  Of course, the N&W went ahead laying track on the Belt Line right-of-way, and the Tidewater had to run its line on the north side of the river after all.  The Gish farm was on the north side of the river and included present-day Highland Park in Southwest Roanoke adjacent to the NS South Yard, the former Tidewater/Virginian yard.  The c. 1830 Gish house is one of the oldest in Roanoke and sits in the park less than 50 feet from the nearest South Yard track.]
