N&W Income Up During '57
Decline Reported For December
   Net income of the Norfolk and Western Railway dropped sharply in 
December but income for all of last year was five per cent higher than 1956.
   The December net income figure of $3,570,481 was 40 per cent under 
the $5,907,814 for the same month in 1956.
   According to the N&W's December financial report issued yesterday, 
the railway's 1957 net income of $44,535,759 set a new record. It 
surpassed the previous high of $42,486,857 in 1956.
   December's Freight revenue was off $2,444,000, or 13 percent under 
the comparable month. Passenger revenue dropped 12 per cent. Railway 
operating expenses were reduced one per cent.
   The operating ratio - or the proportion of operating revenues 
consume by operating expenses - rose from 79.86 in December of 1956 
to 79.81 last month.
   For the entire year, N&W reported freight revenues of $235.7 
million, and increase of four per cent. Taxes were $47,472,000, and 
increase of five per cent and nearly $3 million above net income. The 
operating ratio was 68.22 in 1957, down slightly from the 68.81 of 
the previous year.
