1958 - N&W To Furlough 44 Additional Workers

   The Norfolk and Western Railway will furlough an additional 44 of 
its employes effective Jan. 11, a company spokesman said yesterday.

   He said the furlough list, naming 21 freight car shop workers and 
23 from other sections of the N&W Shops, was posted before the end of 
work yesterday.
   This brings the total number of employes furloughed in Roanoke 
since Nov. 15 to 242. According to the U.S. Railroad Retirement 
Board's Roanoke office's records, the Jan. 11 layoff will raise to 
333 the total number of N&W workers on furlough.
   The spokesman cited declines in business as the reason for the 
latest furloughs.
