Gordon:
I think some 4-4-2 J's lasted until 1935.   Unfortunately,
many pictures depict the headlight as being a  gallon
can of paint.   After several modifications,  which
included lowering the headlight,  the  4-4-2's turned out
to look like real flyers.  There's a drawing in  the
archives that charts speed vertically and  location
horizontally for the 4-4-2's in regular  passenger service
Norfolk - Petersburg. One attained 76 MPH through
Warwick Swamp - between Waverly and Disputanta. 
Not a record breaker, but not bad for the early 1900s either.
