You ask what were the facilities at Waynesboro concerning turntable and
coaling the locomotives. To add further to what Gordon said, the N&W MP
Dept's Data Book No. II, revised 8-21-1951, lists Waynesboro having a 115'
turntable installed in 1918, and one "Norfolk Style" coal hoist that served
one track. The bucket capacity for this particular coal hoist was 3 1/3 cu.
yard. There was no "coaling station", or tower, listed for Waynesboro.
I remember Radford having one Norfolk style coal hoist which the referenced
data book stated it had; however Radford is listed as serving two tracks.
There was only track that the locomotive tender was spotted to have the coal
dumped into, but there were two tracks with hoppers for unloading the coal
into the hoist. This data book I believe is referring to the "Number of
Tracks Served" to mean the number of tracks with hoppers serving the hoist.
The previous discussion has included the use of both yard and road coal as
fuel. Radford had both road and yard power being dispatched from that
terminal--thus the need for two different types of coal and two tracks. If
someone else has more knowledge about this, please advise me.
