Looking back
By Belinda Harris
Roanoke Times

1932 (75 years ago)

"No wonder you shivered early this morning. The
mercury dropped to 16 degrees."

...

"One hundred and fifty children here have new shoes
today, where yesterday they were barefooted. ...
Members of the Accounting Department of the Norfolk
and Western Railway had taken what was left over from
their annual contribution for Christmas baskets, made
arrangements with the Roanoke Shoe Company for a
substantial discount, and financed the distribution."

1907 (100 years ago)

"Hundreds of men assembled around the entrances of the
banks of Roanoke yesterday afternoon for the purpose
of getting money. It was a wonderful sight, and when
the money began to flow, in what seemed an endless
stream, the wonders of the situation increased. The
crowd of men ... came from the shops of the Norfolk &
Western Railway. Yesterday was their pay day."

...

"The new power house of the Roanoke Railway and
Electric company, on Walnut street, entered last
evening upon its active career, and from now on will
labor on day and by night in the service of the people
of the city."
