FOR DOUBLE TRACK
Engineers Making Survey for This Work for Southern Railway
Amherst, Va., Dec. 16 - A corps of Southern railway engineers have
been for several weeks past camping at this place. They are engaged
in making surveys for the Southern's new double track which they
expect to build. From Monroe, in this county, south, the Southern is
already double-tracked. At great expense they have about completed a
belt line around the city of Lynchburg. This belt line extends from
Winesap, the station between Monroe and Lynchburg, in this county, to
Durmid, in Campbell county.
The present survey is thought to be for the double track from
Monroe, in this county, to Orange, from which point there is already
a doubled track to Washington. It is not known how far the new track
will be from the present track. It is said that several routes are
contemplated. An effort will be made to have the line as straight as
possible. It is also said that it will touch the numerous soapstone
quarries in Nelson county.
