MANY NEW ENGINES
Nearly a Score of Them Now on Hand at the Shops
The Norfolk and Western Railroad is receiving at its shops here a
large consignment of new engines. It is stated that there will be a
hundred of them altogether, fifty of them from the locomotive works
at Richmond and fifty from the Baldwin works at Philadelphia. They
are of the very latest design, and are capable of developing large
power. There are at present between fifteen and twenty of them at the
shops and more of them are expected every day. They are beautiful
specimens of machinery, and, judging by their appearance, they will
prove useful and valuable additions to the Norfolk and Western's
equipment. And from all accounts, the company will find plenty of
work for them to do. It is stated that the railroad from one end to
the other is just as busy as it can be, and although the hours of the
men at the shops were recently reduced from ten to eight hours, there
does not seem to be any diminution in the volume of work that is
coming in. It is whispered around that it will not be long before the
old schedule of hours will be restored.
