GREAT REJOICING AMONG THE COAL OPERATORS
------
New Line Down Big Sandy will be Open for Traffic December 20th
------
There is much rejoicing among the coal operators along the Norfolk and Western over the official announcement that the new [single track] line down the Big Sandy will be open for traffic by December 20.
The track will be closed by the 10th of the present month, and the work of leveling and solidifying the roadbed will occupy but a short time. The opening of this line will greatly relieve the present congested condition of the road [on the old single-track Twelve Pole line] and will enable all trains, both freight and passenger, to make better time than is possible under present conditions. The Sandy valley line will be made the main line of the system, and passenger trains Nos. 3 and 4 will run over that line exclusively. In the manner of dispensing freight trains, the two lines will be made to serve largely the purpose of a double track. The loaded coal trains will be run [west] over the Kenova and Big Sandy branch, while the trains of empty cars bound for the coal fields, will go south [railroad east] over the old track. By this arrangement, the work of shipping coal will be greatly facilitated.
The grading for double track and additional sidings in Mingo county is being pushed, there [sic., "three" ??] crews a day being used at some of the heavier points.
The grading for this work involves the removal of immense quantities of stone and is necessarily of a most tedious character.
