Finds Coal Mine in Cellar

Bluefield, W. V., Nov. 6. - Building a house in a hurry and
leaving the excavation of the cellar until after he had moved his
family into it has brought a fortune to Thomas H. Cooper, manager of
the Colgate Mine, in the Pocahontas coal field. Cooper is now the
owner of a rich mine.
Cooper's house is near the general store in Coaldale. His duties
as mine manager require his presence near the pit, and, in order to
be on hand, he moved from his old home into a house that he had built
hurriedly near the mine. A few days ago the two Italian laborers at
work on the excavation ran their picks into a seam of coal 9 3/4 feet thick.
Mr. Cooper is a resident of Salem and is well known in this
section, being connected with the glass works in Salem.
