Let me add to the fine account Dave has presented that in Lynchburg, are  the 
only two tunnels on the entire Atlanta-Alexandria line!  The southern  most 
one is at the station in Lynchburg and the second one is about a mile  north.  
Starting with the crossing of the Staunton River at Altavista, and  continuing 
north are several nice trestle.  Probably the one over the James  River, 
after the second tunnel, is the more photographed and picturesque. You  will 
notice many stations along the way that have or are being restored. Coming  to mind 
are: Danville, Chatham, Altavista, and Lynchburg's Kemper Street  station. 
Amherst's station is still there but in very sad condition.,
