Saunders "Merging Lines" and "Main Lines" provide an overall survey of railroad history in the twentieth century. Both are excellently written, and will clear up alot of the misconceptions that many (railfans especially) have about the business and how it developed. Loving's book is a fine standalone, but Saunders puts it all into a larger perspective.

If one is interested in 20th century rail history, all three are a "must."

For more on the N&W/PRR relationship, there are also the Penn Central post-mortem books -- "Fallen Colossus" is my favorite, but "Wreck of the Penn Central" and "No Way to Run a Railroad" also offer quite a bit of information regarding the PRR/N&W relationship.

PS Still looking for builders data on N&W Schooner Barges built in Brooklyn NY in the early 1890s

think this discussion would be a whole lot better informed after reading
Saunders' Merging ines and Main Lines, and Loving's The Man who Loved
Trains.
