RAILROAD COMPANY MAKING EXTENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS

Bluefield, W. Va., Sept. 30 - The extensive improvements which the
Norfolk & Western railroad is making on the Mercer street bridge are
will under way.
The Virginia Bridge and Iron Company has already commenced to
erect the bridge and the actual construction will be pushed this
week. The company will support the present bridge with false work
between the tracks and will construct a through clear span of 192
feet, making the total length of the bridge nearly 200 feet.
Six or seven additional tracks will be placed under the bridge so
as to facilitate the handling of traffic, especially the passenger service.
The railroad company has 180 men putting down new tracks in the
Bluefield yards, in addition to the six tracks between the Mercer
street bridge and the west end tower.
This work of laying new tracks between the tower and Mercer street
bridge and the additional room at the west end tower.
This work of laying new tracks between the tower and Mercer street
bridge and the additional room at the station will be of great
benefit to the traveling public.
Heretofore eastbound passenger trains have frequently been forced
to lay for several minutes in the west end yard while freight trains
were being shifted off the main tracks. This delay has been very
annoying and the traveling public will be pleased to learn that those
days are rapidly passing away with the memory of the Bluefield that was.
