Yard power

I can only tell about Bluefield, but it was first hand observation. From
1946 (probably earlier, but this was my first awareness) they used Z1a's
to switch coal cars in the middle and east yard - mostly pushing them
through the scales. The passenger station was switched by W2's. This
lasted until 1951 when the first five S1a's were assigned to Bluefield,
replacing both the W2's and the Z1a's. Later on, the S1a's were
supplemented by Y3's and at least one Y5 (see page 86 of my N&W In
Color, Vol. 1. Hope this helps. Jim Nichols
