Park Road ? The road crossing near Worthington was
Powell Road, five miles north of the PC crossing.
N&W didn't exactly inherit a well-maintained railroad
in the 1964 merger. Some in the Maintenance of Way
Department had found that for lack of joint bolts, PC
forces would drive spikes through the joint bars and
bend them over to keep them in place.
Around 1969, N&W reconfigured the double track on
the Sandusky District and eastward there were two
tracks in place from Powell Road to Joyce Avenue.
Even five years after the merger, N&W was still
in the process of upgrading the line. The westward
main track was OK. Westbound trains kinda got
priority because they had to climb a 1% ruling grade
out of Joyce Avenue. The eastward main track was in
such bad shape that it had a permanent 6 MPH "slow"
order. Crews en route Sandusky/Bellevue to Joyce Ave.
anticipated the signal they'd get approaching Powell
Road. If the turnout (good for 50 MPH) was lined for
the east track, they could look forward to the running
the final 12 miles to Joyce Avenue at 6 MPH. In 1972,
N&W re-laid the eastbound track with 2nd hand rail.
