Ken,
Okay, I stand corrected. I have been around (NW/NS) diesels my whole life so I just got used to using that term on steam (before my time) and diesel locomotives.

Not meaning to be picky, but "unit" is a term for diesels, steam locomotives are steam locomotives, or steam engines (although not technically correct).
There are two of the H-8 surviving, 1601 at Henry Ford Museum, with the C&O for Progress logo painted on the front, that no H-8s ever carried them in service and the 1604 that was on display at VMT in Roanoke until it was moved in early 1986 to Baltimore.

This is a pretty good summation of the story.

Guys,
Someone had inquired about the C&O Alleghenies. Here is a pic of C&O 1601. This unit is at the Henry Ford Museum near Detroit Michigan.

This is the only unit fom the original Allegheny H-8 fleet that I know of that is still in existence.
