Copper stolen from the W-S District

All trains on NS have a 3 character symbol or unique number,it has to be
3 character to work in computer programs.

After the Conrail merger/take over the system ran out of  3 digit train
numbers so letters began to be used to come up with a 3 character
symbol.

 

900s are work trains.

200s are intermodal trains

 

Local freights have the first letter of the operating division as the
first character.

 

V74  =  Virginia Division  #  74    Local Freight
