RAILROAD NOTES

Through Heart of Lunenburg County

Meherrin, Va., April 15. -- The force on the Tidewater Railroad has reached
this county laying track. They came over the border Monday last, and
are working
this way at the rate of about one mile per day. This is the first great trunk
line to lay rails in this county, with the exception of the Southern, which has
a short line of track through this corner of the county.
It is estimated that they will arrive at Victoria, in this county, with the
rail completed within thirty or forty days, and that trains will run to this
point soon after, hauling material for the building of the shops.
As soon as this line is complete to this point a road which will
be owned and
operated by the Edgerton Lumber Company will be run from Victoria southwest
about fifteen miles to their lumber camps, and this, too, will open
up an entire
new country which contains million after million feet of lumber that will be
sent out over the Tidewater Railroad. A large force of contractors is busy now
cleaning off the place where the shops will be located. This alone will take
until the rail is laid to this point, as a large place will be needed for this
work, and many thousand yards of dirt will have to be moved.
