Yep, those hoppers are so old the paint has rusted clean off of them. Either that, or they were sandblasted a long time ago and never primered. (I kind of doubt that.)
Look here and you can see the outline of the old N&W lettering on the center car.

Of course, I don't know how old because I don't know beans about rolling stock. (...now, if it were a block signal on the other hand...) Well, you get the picture.
It'll be nice to see those cars back in their original N&W paint again one of these days, whenever that is.

Those hoppers are VERY old, with the fishbelly sides and clamshell doors. I think that clamshells were on their way out by the mid-20s. IIRC, from Dow's book, almost all steel hoppers built with clamshells were rebuilt with conventional hopper bottoms, losing their fishbelly sides in the process, fairly early on.
