She rode the anthracite line in the early 1900's. Long after that the DL&W
went to soft coal. I would bet that the PRR and NJC were both using soft
coal by the 1930.
When did you live in Jersey?

Maybe Phoebe Snow's white dress stayed white; but I remember it differently.
I grew up along the New York and Long Branch, a commuter line with both PRR
and NJC steam power, using anthracite coal. We lived two blocks from the
tracks. One of my chores was to gently tap the cinders from mom's sheets
which were drying on the clothesline, before taking them back into the
house. Maybe the frequent stops and starts
(stations averaged one per mile) boosted the production of cinders, compared
to cruising for miles at higher speed. or maybe it was just an ad man's pen
at work. Any members who grew up along DL&W's commuter lines in north NJ ?
