Gary,
I would have to challenge that statement. Not because of the way they work, but because of the aspects themselves. For example, in a CPL, if one light burns out you still know what kind of signal you have. In some, as many as three lights could burn out and you would still know what the signal displayed!
Try that with todays "stick" signals. If the green bulb burns out the signal downgrades to yellow. If the yellow burns out it downgrades to red.
There should have been a way that the CPL aspects could have been made to work with todays technology. Somebody just didn't try hard enough.
