  I've seen "field welds" ( the name of which I cannot remember now to save my life) for the past 20+ years around Roanoke. I'm sure our MofW friends can fill us in.

    Bellevue welded rail into 1440 ft strips.  When installed, I believe the strips
    were coupled with rail joints.  Are the joints now made using a field weld ?
    An interesting note - Roanoke welded rail for RF&P before N&W ever used
    welded rail.
