Some kind chap on the Yahoo "All Interlocking Towers" Discussion Group is, as his labor of love, photographing and posting the annual summaries of interlockings, published in "Railway Signaling."
These are very much of a summary nature. For each year, they show data about the interlockings on each road on which changes have been made. The categories of things counted shifted over the years. In some years they published "new interlockings placed in service," in other years "all-relay plants constructed," in other years "rebuilt interlockings," in other years "interlockings rebuilt or added to." In some years they listed the number of home signals and switches at facilities, and in other years they didn't.
So far, this gent has only put up 1924-1925 and 1945-1955. Hopefully he will post a lot more years.
I'm going through the photos and abstracting the data on N&W and VGN interlockings. When all his photos are posted, I'll put everything into a spreadsheet and offer it to the group.
Of course, the N&W and VGN were rather small operations, conservative, and didn't tend to tinker with what worked or dabble with the newfangled.
To whet your appetites:
1924 Interlocking Plants Completed: N&W, Chillicothe, Ohio, crossing, 12 desk-type circuit controller levers. 1924 Interlockings Under Construction: N&W Tunnel No. 1, gauntlet, 2 desk-type circuit controllers to handle gauntlet in tunnel; Tunnel No. 2, gauntlet, 2 desk-type circuit controllers to handle gauntlet in tunnel.
1948 New Interlockings Placed in Service: Bedford 4 signals, 1 ep <electro-pneumatic> switch machine; Wilmore 15 signals, 6 ep switches; Alnwick 14 signals, 6 ep switches; Richlands 8 signals, 2 ep switches.
