The doctored photo that you refer to, with the young boy looking down at a train with the J "hauling varnish", is used on the cover of a May 2, 1942 N&W time table that is up for auction on eBay today.

For any who might be interested, it is item no. 120028285024.

The bidding ends on 9/12/06 at 13:30 PDT

Subject: "Silver Ribbons of Adventure" - What's the Story?

Attached is a famous N&W publicity photo. In the VTU archives, it was titled "Silver Ribbons of Adventure."

This particular version, which bears negative number 500537, depics a class Y handling a Time Freight in double track territory. There was another version on which the artist had air brushed out the class Y and substituted a streamlined passenger engine hauling varnish.

I remember both versions being used extensively in advertising and as end-murals in passenger coaches.

1. What is the location where this picture was taken?
2. What is the date of the photo?
3. Who was the kid, and what "became of" him?

This famous scene will be remembered in years to come as quintiessentially N&W, and someone should document the details before they become entirely lost.

A perfect set of questions for Mr. Ken Miller, who is such a good detective that he could find Sacagawea's pessary.
