Whit:
There WAS a plan for moving Tidewater coal originating on the C&O
to the N&W at James. This was a station on the Old Line through
Lynchburg (a large portion now abandoned) a few miles east of Island Yard.
On the C&O, the station is known as Six Mile. A connection between the
two roads there would have been, well, quite an accomplishment.

Might add that on The Cardinal one summer, the train was held
at Huntington account derailment on the C&O at the Big Sandy
bridge. The train went to Kenova, picked up an N&W Road Foreman,
then detoured via N&W to Chillicothe and B&O to Cincinnati. By my
recollection, it took a back-up move to get on the B&O.
