Fireman during excursion era

The assigned fireman on the operating district ( If one was called for the
train ) was payed at Firemans rate for the assigned run.

Yes there is still a union rate for fireman, used mostly for engineer
trainees that have been in training over a certain period of time.

Back to the excursion era, even when the railroad called a fireman he usually
just went along for the ride, while the locomotive was actually fired by a
fireman from the Steam Dept.
