Oakie:
Before the arrangement with CSXT out of St. Paul, Southern (later NS)
moved many a unit coal train across the Appalachia Division. Their
base of operations was at Andover, a mile north of Appalachia. There
are actually three hills to cross between Andover and Bulls Gap. An
SD-45 was rated at only 1900 tons eastbound, so Southern made the
most of their "Radio Flyers".

Power from an empty train had arrived at Andover, but before they could
service the engines, an eastbound had radioed that they were having
engine trouble on the first grade, Oreton Hill near Tito (pronounced Tie
Toe by the locals). The force left Andover en route to the problem, but
someone failed to shut down the radio car. It intercepted a transmission
from the train in trouble and the units left the service track unattended.
By the time they made it to Appalachia, the runaway units were making
such speed that they derailed on the 8 degree curve under US 23. I
haven't seen any "Radio Flyers" lately. I note from the Appalachia
Division timetable that Mr. Moorman was once Division Engineer there.
