Also a favorite of old housepainters for cleaning brushes and
hands....probably because it was cheaper than "mineral spirits" or
turpentine and readily available. Not recommended because of
flammability and (real) lead.
Many of these guys also were known to drink alcohol to excess on the
reasoning that a "nip took the taste of the paint out of your mouth at
the end of the day."
