Jim:
The phosphate rock went in covered hoppers - NS had 200, N&W
put multitudes of the 172,000 series in phosphate service, and
NS Rwy. leased some covered hoppers usually in salt service
from the Genesee & Wyoming. Southern didn't participate. The
SUPERPHOSPHATE was shipped in covered hoppers and box cars
that had the doors plugged with grain doors, a cardboard sheet with
metal strips that could be nailed to the interior. Phosphoric Acid
was in leased UTLX tank cars, later on in TGSX tank cars, and a few
shipments to Phillips Petroleum in PSPX tankers.

P.S. The GNWR covered hoppers were a pain to deal with -- their
tare weight was about 65,000 lbs. which meant that you couldn't
get 100 tons in the car without exceeding the then-maximum
weight on rail of 263,000 lbs, The rate was based on 100 tons,
so it was money thrown away if the car had less than 100 tons.
