John:
I first became aware of the doorless box cars in 1970. How long were they
in service ? Probably Jimmy Lisle can you a better answer. Neither can
I give you the "drop dead" date on cars equipped with friction bearings. I
believe that it's OK to use friction bearings as long as the car remains on
line and is not interchanged. I checked the ORER and found that lo and
behold, Wabash brought some 40 ft. boxes with six foot doors into N&W
service, but they had only an 80,000 lb. capacity. How ancient! The yellow
ball shown on some cars designated that the car had been inspected for
the outlawed U-1 wheel. It wouldn't apply to one of the limestone box cars,
because the U-1 wheel was for cars with 140,000 lb. capacity.
