Locomotive Sand

I can't remember the source or even if it is reliable, so take this as a  
grain of salt until verified.  I recall someone telling me many years ago  that 
N&W hauled company sand in open gons! If no one comes forward to  support or 
deny this matter, I will start my own search.  I have a friend  who worked on 
the Shenandoah Division in your time frame and I will ask  him.
