Anyone know where these locations are?

Here is some information on the locations in question.

As Harry Bundy wrote, Dunlow was on the 83-mile Twelve Pole line, which was
the original main line between Naugatuck and Kenova, WV on the Ohio
Extension opened in November 1892 (Striplin p. 112). After completion of
the shorter 60-mile, low-grade Big Sandy line in December 1904 (N&W Mag.
1925, p. 15) between the same two points, the Twelve Pole line was
downgraded and 53 miles of it were abandoned in 1933 (Striplin p. 169).

Estonoa was the original post office in St. Paul, VA on the N&W Clinch
Valley line. The post office could not use the name of the town because
there was an earlier St. Paul post office in Carroll County Virginia. After
the Carroll County post office name was changed, the post office in St. Paul
was renamed for its town.(See: http://ls.net/~newriver/va/wiseecon.htm).

Ethelfelts was the post office for Blair (later Cliffview) located 2.65
miles north of Galax, VA on the N&W's North Carolina Extension (Webb, p.
85). This was the site of Cliffside, the expansive residence of Thomas L.
Felts of Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency (and Matewan massacre) fame. There
were some women named "Ethel" in his family (Ethelfelts; get it?) (See:
http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/nuckolls1.htm).

Others have identified Gossan, Leckie, and New River Depot, and referred to
Monarat.

Regarding Lovely Mount, "In 1885, Central City was incorporated as a town
and in 1887; its name was officially changed to Radford. In 1888, the post
office was moved from Lovely Mount Tavern to Radford, although it retained
the Lovely Mount name until 1891 when it was changed to Radford." (See:
http://www.radford.va.us/mainPages/history.htm)

The January 1930 Official Guide lists the following:

East Radford @ Mile Post 300.6 (10 trains/day)
Radford @ Mile Post 301.8 (6 trains/day)
New River @ Mile Post 302.8 (6 trains/day)

The surviving N&W passenger station near Radford College is on Norwood St.
near its intersection with Tyler Ave. Both old Sanborn insurance maps and
modern MapQuest maps for Radford refer to the early passenger station and
the area near the College as "East Radford," and they refer to the station
farther west on Leonard near its intersection with Randolph St. and the
nearby area as simply "Radford."

"Striplin" refers to Pat Stiplin's book on the history of the N&W, and
"Webb" refers to Munsey Webb's book on the North Carolina Branch.

Subject: Anyone know where these locations are?

February 17, 2006

Good afternoon, all:

I am trying to identify the milepost and branch of
several locations. These all served briefly as an
end-point for a Railway Post Office run.
Unfortunately, I don't have early N&W station lists.
These points are:

Dunlow
Estonoa
Ethelfelts
Gossan
Leckie
Monarat
Lovely Mount
New River Depot

Also, what was the milepost for East Radford relative
to Radford? Is the surviving 1950s building located
near the Radford University campus the "Radford"
station?

Aside from milepost and subdivision, when an town or
location was renamed, spelling changes, plus any other
incidental information about the location or N&W
branch will be appreciated. All information received
will be credited to the source if you provide your
first and last name. Since I'll be cutting and
pasting text, it helps if you do add your whole name
instead of just a nickname or first name.

Best wishes,

Frank Scheer
