GaREEEE!
You're talking about my old alma mater. That's the OLD Norfolk
Southern you're working on. You're correct too -- it's always
been in pathetic shape. Between Raleigh and Charlotte there
was still some 70# rail and the speed limit was 15 MPH
in 1960.

The three-diamond crossing is now operated from Glenwood
Yard, but there had been an interlocking plant there. It was
known as Boylan on the NS and Raleigh Tower on the SAL.
That's a paired track operation from Fetner (Cary) to Raleigh
Tower -- North Carolina RR owns the east track and CSX owns
the west track.

One of the problems with working at Boylan Tower was that
there was no way to determine what was coming from the
south toward you. S.O.P. was to leave the plant lined for
SAL. There was a secret code used by the railroaders there.
Not even the CIA knew about it. When a Southern train for
Goldsboro appeared, it would blink the headlight as it came
of the hill at N. C. State. A new relief man showed up there
on third trick. The O.S. bell sounded and he saw a train passing
N.C.State. It had a blinking light, so he lined up for the train
to go toward Goldsboro. The train took the signal and stopped
at Raleigh's Southern depot. Turns out it was the SILVER
Meteor powered by one of the EMD's that had a mars light.
The train crew thought the Meteor was going to detour.

Aside from the prison near by, there's also the state asylum,
Dix Hill that's just down the tracks. If we don't hear from you,
we'll know what happened.
