Sadly, I report that as of last week Cotton is still living but his chances of surviving cancer of the stomach are very slim. I attend church with his grand daughter and she is the source of my information.

Subject: Agent Glade Spring: W.E. Belcher

On 12/28, Mike Jackson wrote a response concerning Meadowview and mentioned W. E. "Cotton" Belcher, who may have been the last Agent at Glade Spring.

Mike... I can remember "Cotton" standing on the platform at Glade, with a green and a white lantern in his hand, flagging No. 18 every night. (No. 18 stopped at Glade every night, anyway, but Glade was a "f" (flag) stop in the Time Table, so the green and white signal was required by rule.

As a young brakeman in the early 1960s, I always looked up to "Mr. Belcher" (as young fellows always addressed the older men in those days,) who held the second trick operator's job at the time. He did things like report trains to the Train Dispatcher and copy Train Orders, which were esoteric and marvelous ! Plus, he was a gentleman.

Mike, do you know what ever "became of" Cotton Belcher?
