A trip to the mountains sounds like fun! But it can be cold this time of year. Another great place is to watch trains is, of course, Roanoke. They have that wonderful enclosed walkway from the Hotel Roanoke to downtown that crosses the main line just west of the East End Shops.

Jeff, the locations you described, Bluefield, Farm, Iaeger, and Williamson, have coaling towers, where the steam locomotives would take on coal. While these are technically tipples, I believe what is being asked is locations where coal is loaded into hoppers and gons. There are not many traditional tipples (now usually called load-outs) left on the main line. I believe there is still an operation at Eckman. The Feds have ordered the removal of all derelict tipples and the reclamation of the surrounding areas. If you search out the branch lines, you might find something, but many of the remaining tipples/ load-outs are on private property and are not accessible from public roads.
