An ID crew is an Inter-Divisional crew. Basically, they operate over what would normally (or historically be) 2 crew districts. For example, Portsmouth - Bellevue crews are still called "ID crews", since the work right through the former crew change point of Columbus. This type of efficiency became possible for example, when locomotives were able to run longer distances without fueling or changing outright, such as when diesel replaced steam. The former crew district, Portsmouth - Columbus, still exists, and are often called "short-pool" crews. - Keith Baker
