Some eastbound trains did continue through NY's Penn Station to New  England, 
via the Hell Gate bridge, which was also the route for New Haven trains  
in/out of NYC.  As far as I am aware now, only Amtrak uses Hell Gate;  Connecticut 
commuter trains terminate at Grand Central.
