Bill:
The interesting point about Norfolk Southern's 2-8-4's was not how much
they cost, but rather what they went for - - - -scrap ! During the
administration of Pat McGinnis, the F-1's were sold to the Domestic
and Foreign Commerce Company after only 10 years of service for
a gross amount of $21,500. D&FCC then sold them to Pan American
Engineering Co. and went out of business. Oddly enough, an NS
official headed the D&FCC. Bad P. R. Bad P. R. Pan American had them
overhauled for NdeM and thru a conditional sales agreement involving
American Smelting & Refining, they went to Mexico for $365,000.

Several railroads later, McGinnis attempted a similar stunt on the B&M
and went to jail.

With regard to inflation, NS purchased three GE 70-toners for Nos. 1 + 2,
the passenger trains (later mail and express only). Since the GE's had no
steam generator, NS had to use steam locomotives during cold weather.
I recently saw that Mercedes has a 400 h.p. roadster. By my recollection,
my 1955 Olds 98 had only 202 h.p. The 400 h.p. Mercedes has 80% of
the horsepower NS used to haul the passenger trains. Now that's inflation.
